Manage the configuration

The purpose of this competency is to achieve the goals of configuration management, i.e. to:

  • identify the products that will be treated as configuration items;
  • support the assessment of change requests and document the results of change control;
  • maintain the validity of the configuration and the accuracy of the configuration management system.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. plan and initiate configuration management
  2. identify configuration items
  3. use configuration records to support all aspects of scope management
  4. maintain configuration management documentation
  5. assure the quality of configuration management

At programme or portfolio level the focus is on major deliverables and co-ordination of lower level configuration management. This may be reflected in the performance criteria for people operating at programme or portfolio level.

Configuration management systems will vary according to the nature of the configuration items.

If it is necessary to include use of specific systems they can be included here as knowledge criteria.

Knowledge and understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the principles and goals of configuration management
  2. responsibilities for configuration management
  3. the context of the work and its impact on configuration management
  4. a procedure for configuration management
  5. the purpose and content of configuration management documentation
  6. how the configuration management system supports change control
  7. how to perform status accounting
  8. how to verify and audit a configuration
  9. how assurance applies to configuration management
