Plan governance

The purpose of this competency is to achieve the goals of governance planning, i.e. to:

  • describe the principles that should be used to manage the work;
  • provide consistency with flexibility across multiple projects and programmes.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. identify external policy documents that will form part of the governance documentation
  2. produce management plans to suit the context of the work
  3. develop new management plans where organisational standards are not available
  4. maintain management plans throughout the life cycle
  5. assure the quality of management plans

Since competencies are aimed at level 2 capability, P1 simply requires the competent person to produce a management plan.

If the host organisation is operating at level 3 then centrally defined documents should be available and tailored to the context of each piece of work.

In this case ‘produce’ may be replaced with ‘tailor’ and P2 used to plug any gaps.

Knowledge and understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the principles and goals of management planning
  2. responsibilities for management planning
  3. the context of the work and its impact on management plans
  4. the purpose and content of a typical management plan
  5. how standard management plans may be tailored
  6. how management plans may be adjusted during the life cycle
  7. how assurance applies to management plans
