The purpose of this competency is to achieve the goals of leadership in the P3 context, i.e. to:

  • provide focus and promote commitment to objectives;
  • inspire team members to successfully achieve the objectives.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. clearly communicate a team’s collective and individual objectives
  2. involve team members in planning how to achieve objectives
  3. adopt a leadership style appropriate to the circumstances
  4. seek feedback and adapt behaviours accordingly
  5. encourage and motivate the team
  6. behave ethically and professionally

Leadership comes in many forms and is affected by many factors. This competency will need to be adapted for different circumstances.

For example, leading a small team with ample opportunity for face-to-face contact requires a different approach to providing ‘visionary’ leadership to a broad stakeholder community.

Adaptations will also need to take into account the positional power of the individual and their role in the P3 organisation.

Knowledge and understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the goals of leadership
  2. the context of the work and its impact on leadership
  3. different styles of leadership and your own natural style
  4. how leadership can adapt with the development of the team
  5. the principles of motivation
  6. the principles of ethical and professional behaviour
