Work within a team

The purpose of this competency is to achieve the goals of teamwork in the P3 context, i.e. to:

  • create a team from a collection of individuals;
  • develop and maintain the performance of the team.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. work with others to maximise your and their contribution to team objectives
  2. help the team work through the phases of team development
  3. demonstrate commitment to the team’s objectives
  4. manage personal objectives, keep promises and highlight issues as soon as possible

The P3 environment has teams at various levels. Different roles are often team members at one level and team leaders at another level. For example, a project manager leads a project team but may be a member of a programme management team.

Most teams now have some element of virtual working but K6 can always be removed if necessary.

Additional knowledge criteria may be required for situations such as international teams.

Knowledge and understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the goals of teamwork
  2. the context of the work and its impact on teamwork
  3. the roles that different individuals perform within a team
  4. the typical development phases that a team goes through
  5. how a team is affected by the different phases of the life cycle
  6. the impact of working as a virtual team
