Manage the organisation

The purpose of this competency is to achieve the goals of organisation management, i.e. to:

  • design an organisation appropriate to the scope of the work to be managed;
  • identify and appoint members of the management team
  • maintain and adapt the organisation throughout the life cycle.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. design an appropriate organisation in accordance with the context of the work
  2. recruit competent staff
  3. lead, motivate, communicate and resolve conflict
  4. maintain the organisation throughout the life cycle
  5. de-mobilise the organisation
  6. assure the maintenance of the organisation

This competency may be applied to someone who has to decide whether work is to be managed as a project or programme. In this case P1 requires an understanding of both projects and programmes.

In less complex situations it may be applied to someone who is given a project and simply has to design a project organisation to suit the circumstances.

While P1 works in both contexts the knowledge criteria may be expanded for clarification.

In an ideal world a manager can recruit their own team but management team members are often appointed on the basis of availability. If the manager has no control over recruitment P2 may be omitted.

Knowledge and understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the principles and goals of organisation management
  2. responsibilities for organisation management
  3. the context of the work and its impact on organisation design
  4. how to define roles and assess the suitability of potential team members
  5. the skills required to lead and support an effective management team
  6. how to respond to changing organisational requirements during the life cycle
  7. how assurance applies to the organisation
  8. the principles of staff redeployment
