Influence

The purpose of this competency is to achieve the goals of influencing in the P3 context, i.e. to:

  • develop and maintain a high performing team;
  • persuade stakeholders to support the objectives;
  • persuade stakeholders to support the achievement of the objectives.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. identify ways in which you can best meet the needs of others whilst meeting your own objectives
  2. maintain effective working relationships
  3. secure champions for particular aspects of the work
  4. develop and present convincing arguments for the principles underlying the objectives
  5. communicate persuasively to gain support for the objectives

There will be many people at different levels within an organisation that the management team need to influence.

Inevitably, positional power will be a significant factor for some stakeholders, i.e. the influencing communication needs to come from someone of perceived authority.

Achieving the performance criteria of this competency across the project, programme or portfolio will be a joint effort between the sponsor and manager. 

Knowledge and understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the goals of influencing
  2. the context of the work and its impact on influencing
  3. how behaviour influences others
  4. how to identify people who will positively influence others
  5. how to identify obstacles and ways to overcome them
  6. ways of assessing the success of influence
